The Studio Backing Cloth Series  / New Paintings

Instead of banks of computers our design studio has two 7m long printing tables at the heart of a cluster of spaces where the art projects are conceived, tested and created. These print tables are covered with a 12 oz canvas backing cloth to protect the layers of industrial felt used to create our preferred printing surface. Over time the backing cloth becomes saturated with daily deposits of print, colour tests, spills, experiments, doodles, arithmetic… After about three months the full 7m backing cloth is ceremonially pinned to the studio wall where it will stay until compositions reveal themselves from amongst the layers and fragments of studio history. More than any individual project, artwork or exhibition the backing cloth paintings record the life and times of a unique art studio in full flight.
